About Ponsonby Electrician

Ponsonby Electrician is a New Zealand owned and operated electrical business, and our registered electricians have been working on Auckland homes and businesses since 2009. Most of our work is in West and Central Auckland, which puts Ponsonby and its neighbours, Grey Lynn, Herne Bay, Freemans Bay and Westmere, right in the middle of it. We serve Ponsonby rather than keep a base here, so an electrician comes to you, whether the job is a planned switchboard upgrade on a Tuesday morning or a dead circuit at two in the morning.

Why Ponsonby calls us

Ponsonby is one of Auckland's first suburbs, and its houses show it: workers' cottages, villas, transitional villas and bungalows on small sections, built close together along narrow streets between the 1860s and the 1940s. Te Ara records that many of those villas and cottages were run down and rented in the 1950s and 1960s before gentrification transformed the suburb from the 1970s. A house with that history has often been renovated more than once, and its wiring tends to be a mix of every decade it has lived through. Our electricians expect that, and they look before they assume.

Ponsonby Road is different again. It is one of the earliest suburban main streets in the Auckland region, lined with shops, many with a flat or office upstairs, in buildings put up between the late 1800s and the 1930s. A bar, restaurant or boutique there runs modern equipment inside an old shell, and when something fails during service it cannot wait for Monday. We work on both sides of the suburb, the homes and the businesses, and we answer the phone at any hour.

Questions Ponsonby people ask

Will an electrician come out to Ponsonby at night or at the weekend?

Yes. Our electricians take call-outs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including public holidays and the middle of the night. Call 021 156 4005 and describe what has happened; our emergency electrician page explains what to check while you wait.

My villa still has an old fuse board. Should I replace it?

It is worth talking about. A fuse has to be rewired or replaced every time it blows, whereas a circuit breaker simply resets, and WorkSafe advises replacing fuses with plug-in circuit breakers of the same rating where possible because they are safer to use. A full switchboard upgrade goes further and gives the house room for the circuits it needs now.

Can you work in a flat above a shop or in an apartment building?

Yes. Ponsonby Road has many shops with a home or office above them, and some of its old buildings, the former Gluepot tavern among them, were converted into shops and apartments. In a shared building, tell us who looks after the common areas when you call, because the meter or the switchboard for your unit may sit somewhere we need a key or permission to reach.

The whole street has gone dark. Is it worth calling you?

Probably not first. When the neighbours and the street lights are out too, the fault is usually on the lines network, so check Vector's outage information for your address and report it there. If only part of the house has gone off, or a breaker will not reset, that is a job for us; if your whole place is off and the neighbours are not, report it to Vector as well, because the fuse at the point of supply is usually theirs.

Will I get a certificate for the work?

Yes. New circuits, new power points, a rewire or a new switchboard are tested when they are finished and you receive a Certificate of Compliance. Simple maintenance, such as replacing a socket or a light fitting, does not need a Certificate of Compliance, but you still receive an Electrical Safety Certificate. Keep your certificates together, as they can be asked for by an insurer or when you sell.
