Ponsonby Electrician

Commercial and hospitality

Commercial electrician for Ponsonby Road shops, bars and offices

From Three Lamps at its northern end to Great North Road, Ponsonby Road is lined with shops, cafes, bars, restaurants, galleries and offices, many of them in buildings more than a century old. As a commercial electrician in Ponsonby we fit out, maintain and repair the electrical side of those businesses, and when something fails during trading, our electricians take the call at any hour.

Old buildings, modern loads

Ponsonby Road is one of the earliest suburban main streets in the Auckland region, and much of it still looks the part. Most of its older commercial buildings went up between the 1880s and the 1930s, typically one or two storeys of brick or plastered brick, some of timber, often with a flat or an office upstairs. Newer mixed-use buildings of up to four storeys sit among them. The Auckland Unitary Plan places the street in its Special Character Areas Overlay, which manages how those buildings change.

For an electrician that mix matters. A building put up for an Edwardian shopkeeper now runs espresso machines, commercial dishwashers, refrigeration, extraction fans, sound systems and a wall of lighting, often from a switchboard sized for a fraction of that. Brick walls do not take cable the way timber framing does, and a tenancy below a home has to be worked on without leaving the people upstairs in the dark. We plan around all of that before the first cable is pulled.

What we do for Ponsonby businesses

Fit-outs and alterations

New circuits, power points and isolation for a new layout, whether you are opening a shop or reworking the back of house.

Kitchens and bars

Supply for cooking, refrigeration, glass washers and coffee machines, and repairs to ovens and cooktops when they fail.

Lighting and shopfronts

Track, feature and dimmable lighting inside, and lighting for windows and verandahs. More on our lighting page.

Switchboards and capacity

A new or upgraded switchboard when the old one cannot carry what the business now runs.

Data and networks

Cabling for EFTPOS, point of sale, offices and music systems, set out on our data and fibre cabling page.

Faults at any hour

Call-outs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, because a power fault on a Friday night costs a hospitality business more than any other time.

Offices, studios and upstairs tenancies

Not every Ponsonby business has a shopfront. Many work from the floors above the shops or from offices in the newer mixed-use buildings, and their needs are quieter but just as real: enough power at every desk without extension leads, lighting that is comfortable for a full working day, a tidy network back to one place, and a heat pump that keeps a top-floor room usable through summer.

When an upstairs tenancy shares a building with a bar or a shop, we find out who controls the common areas and which switchboard feeds which tenancy before work starts, so one business's job does not cut power to another's.

Certificates and inspections

Electrical work in New Zealand comes with paperwork for good reason. WorkSafe sets out the risk categories of prescribed electrical work, from low-risk maintenance to high-risk work such as mains work, and the certificates that go with them: Certificates of Compliance, Records of Inspection and Electrical Safety Certificates.

Every piece of prescribed work we complete in your premises is tested, and you receive the certificate for it. Where the work is high risk and has to be inspected, we arrange a licensed electrical inspector. Keep those documents with your lease or building records: a landlord, an insurer or the next owner of the business may ask for them.

Questions from Ponsonby businesses

Can you work when we are closed?

Our electricians take call-outs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For planned work, tell us when the business is closed or quiet and we will talk through timing that keeps disruption to a minimum.

There is a flat above our shop. Does that change anything?

It means we check which switchboard and which supply serve each part of the building before anything is switched off, and agree with you how the people upstairs will be told.

Can you repair our commercial oven or fridge?

Ovens and cooktops, yes, including their elements, switches and supply. Fridges are not something we repair, though we can fix the circuit or power point that feeds one.

We are adding equipment. Will our switchboard cope?

We check what the board and the supply are carrying now and what the new equipment needs. If the board is full or undersized, a switchboard upgrade comes first, with inspection where the regulations require it.

Do you provide the certificates our landlord wants?

For the electrical work we do, yes: it is tested and certified, and inspected by a licensed electrical inspector we arrange where that is required. Ask your landlord exactly which documents they want, and we will tell you which of them come from our work.
